1. Plug into your power source to find the purpose in your writing

Proverbs 16:3

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.

Sometimes writing can be less about uncovering a character and more about discovering ourselves. Being grounded first in who we really are, enables us to explore who we are not— the persona we’ve created and why— and unlocks the mystery of character.

2. Surround yourself with a safe group of people who will support you with honesty and love.

Everyone has something to say. Some say it better than others. Find the ones that speak truth in your life and move you forward on your journey. Find a local critique group and get involved. This may take some effort to locate one as not every town has a group. ACFW has a listing of local chapters. If you are not close to a local writer's group, consider joining one online or starting your own. Being part of a critique group may seem daunting at first, but have courage. It may be the most important step you take!

3. Read, read, read! Find books in your genre and books on craft.

I know how valuable your time is, so I'm not going to list all the sites I may be connected to, only those at the top of my list.

Kristen Lamb- "Author, Blogger, Social Media Jedi!" One of the best blog sites I've found yet. Blogs from writing helps to marketing and back again. She has a sense of humor that will leave you laughing out loud.

K.M. Weiland- Full of tips on story outlining, character arcs, scene structure, etc.

4. Attend a Conference.

Conferences offer great opportunities to grow as a writer. Not only are the teachings exceptional, but the atmosphere offers a chance to network and be encouraged by other writers on the same journey. Also, conferences provide a unique opportunity to meet editors and agents and pitch your fabulous story idea. I have been a part of these conferences regularly and can recommend them wholeheartedly:

ACFW National Conference- Held once a year in either Nashville or Texas. ACFW members receive discounted rates. Contests for published and unpublished authors.

Write His Answer- Offered in both Philadelphia and Colorado once a year.

Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference - Offered yearly in early summer in North Carolina.
